Trail Run

Dettifoss run is located in Europe’s largest National Park – named after the great glacier Vatnajökull. The run takes you on hiking paths through the unique natural wonders of the area. Three different racing distances are offered, making the run ideal for both experienced long distance runners as well as for those who would like to experience off road running for the first time.  All racing routes end in Ásbyrgi but have different starting points. The longest distance, 32,7 km, the second one is 21,2 km, and the shortest one is 13 km.

It is safe to say that when it comes to the scenery, this race is one of a kind.  The roughest part of the race is between Dettifoss and Hólmatungur where the surface is sand, rock and rough gravel.  Just above Hólmatungur the vegetation starts and the surface switches to a dirt path.  As the route proceeds down river the vegetation turns more to shrubbery.  One river needs to be waded and plastic bags are available at the location for those who wish.  From Rauðhólar, below Hljóðaklettar, the race takes you over some rocky surfaces along the old riverbed of Jökulsá from the time Ásbyrgi was formed.  The last leg of the route takes you north alongside Ásbyrgi on sheep paths through a birch forest.  This part tends to be quite slow going for weary feet.

Services

We put great pride into making the run an enjoyable experience for each and every runner. Various services are included in the registration fee: Runners are transported by Mountain vehicles to each starting point. Drink stations, offering fruits, water and energy drinks are at approximately 5 km intervals. The route is carefully marked and security will is present in places where the route runs close to the canyon edge and elsewhere as deemed necessary.
